Challenge

Many of the world’s most critical ecosystems are threatened by deforestation for agricultural expansion, the degradation of natural habitats, and illegal hunting and wildlife trade. These threats are complex, interconnected and often linked to inequality and a lack of sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. Given the magnitude of these challenges, conservation needs to mobilise all parts of society to respond faster and at greater scale than ever before. This requires a coordinated effort by the public and private sectors as well as philanthropy, all providing expertise and funding to help address local drivers of degradation and accelerate sustainable economic transitions.

The Nature Investment Facility's response

Cartier for Nature is acutely aware of the need for a coordinated and integrated effort at scale to address biodiversity loss. It has therefore become a founding member and financial supporter of The Nature Investment Facility. This new UN-led financing mechanism leverages private and public funding – including philanthropic donations, international carbon and biodiversity finance, as well as investments from the business sector – to secure the long-term future and prosperity of the world’s most critical ecosystems and the people who live in them. The Nature Investment Facility’s ambition is to preserve 25 at-risk areas of outstanding natural value, including UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage sites. It is piloting its approach on two sites in Burundi and Thailand with the support of Cartier for Nature.
